In his lifetime, Egon Schiele's expressive depictions of naked bodies confronted social and sexual mores head on and his drawings and paintings are still controversial even today. Schiele was the enfant terrible of Viennese Modernism, believing that "art cannot be modern, art is primeval." He died during the Spanish flu pandemic in October 1918, aged just 28.
